A cart that will not move is the call we get most after batteries, and it is the one where guessing costs owners the most money. The parts are not cheap, they are easy to swap, and the symptoms overlap. Here is how we sort them out.
The drive system, in one paragraph
On an electric cart, the pedal moves a throttle input (a microswitch on older carts, a potentiometer or inductive sensor on newer ones) that tells the controller how much current to send. The controller cannot connect to the pack on its own; the solenoid, a heavy-duty relay, closes to put pack voltage on the controller’s input when the key is on and the pedal is pressed. The controller then feeds the motor, a series-wound DC motor on most older Club Car, E-Z-GO, and Yamaha carts, a separately excited or AC motor on newer ones and on most ICON, Evolution, Bintelli, and Kandi LSVs. Every one of those parts can fail, and every one can look like the others when it does.
Clicks but won’t move
The most common no-go symptom. The click means the solenoid’s coil is being energized: key, pedal switch, and coil circuit are working. What happens next decides the fault.
- Solenoid contacts burned. The coil pulls in, the click is audible, but the high-current contacts inside are pitted or welded open and pass nothing. Common on carts that sit in humidity. We verify by measuring pack voltage on the solenoid’s output side with the pedal down. No voltage out with voltage in: solenoid. $100 to $250 installed.
- Controller not outputting. Voltage reaches the controller, the throttle input signals correctly, and the controller sends nothing to the motor. Controllers fail from heat, moisture, voltage spikes, and age. $300 to $600 installed.
- Throttle input dead. The solenoid closes because the pedal switch works, but the throttle sensor that tells the controller how much to send has failed or drifted. Cheap part, frequently misdiagnosed as a controller.
- Corroded main cable or terminal. The solenoid clicks and closes, but a corroded lug on the pack’s main positive or negative drops so much voltage under load that the motor cannot turn. Within a couple of miles of the Gulf, Lemon Bay, or the Intracoastal this is a routine finding, and it is the cheapest fix on the list.
No click at all
Key on, pedal down, silence. That points upstream of the solenoid: a dead pack, a blown fuse, a failed key switch, a tow/run switch left in tow, a pedal microswitch that has failed, or a solenoid coil that is open. On Club Car carts with the onboard computer, a locked-out charging fault can also prevent the cart from running. Runs, but weak, surging, or cutting out
A cart that moves but stutters, surges, loses power under load, or dies after a few minutes and comes back:
- Voltage sag from a tired pack is the first suspect and the easiest to confirm with a per-battery load test.
- A throttle input drifting produces surging and inconsistent speed.
- A controller overheating in a 90-degree garage will fold back current or shut down, then recover when it cools. NOAA’s normals put Venice’s average July and August high at 91.5 degrees; controllers mounted near a hot battery compartment run well above that.
- Motor brushes and bearings on older series motors wear out. Worn brushes arc and lose power; a dry bearing screams and eventually seizes. Rebuild is often the right call on a good motor; replacement makes sense when the case, windings, or splines are damaged. $300 to $1,000.
- A loose or corroded connection anywhere in the high-current path produces intermittent faults that mimic all of the above, which is why every diagnostic includes a voltage-drop check under load along the cables.

Heat, humidity, and the drive system
Everything on this page fails faster in South County than in a dry climate. Solenoid contacts corrode in humid air, controller electronics bake in a closed garage, and motor bearings rust on carts that sit through a seasonal owner’s summer away. Storm season adds surge and saltwater: after Ian in 2022 and Helene and Milton in 2024, we saw controllers that took a spike on power restoration and motors that had been under brackish water. A cart that has been through surge should be tested before anyone turns the key. An annual tune-up catches the loose connection and the corroding lug first, and a charger test rides along, because an undercharging charger produces the same weak-cart symptoms as a failing controller.
